FIFTH DIMENSION

Basic philosophy

5D activities are carried out in a small teacher education unit and intertwined with local programs in promoting childhood development. The sites are co-ordinated with the work of the Centre for Developmental Teaching and Learning. Courses of early and teacher education support the activities. The students plan and organise children´s activities, collect data for research courses and their master´s degree theses.

THE STUDENT´S WORK AIMS AT INTEGRATING THREE DOMAINS OF EDUCATION:

1. Practical skills and habits of working with children. Understanding children´s point of view, ways of thinking and emotional life.
2. Mastery of research methods in developmentally oriented environment.
3. Theoretical understanding of child development.

THE ORGANISATION OF THE SITES HAS MULTIPLE GOALS SIMULTANEOUSLY:

A) Solving actual educational problems and development of new practices at each site.
B) Research on activities and child development (genetic experiments, the zones of proximal development).
C) Professional development of the students and site staff.

Each site is at the same time an element of the research program of the Centre for Developmental Teaching and Learning, a study environment for the students and an unit of the international network of the fifth dimension.
